Jaisalmer
- Jaisalmer is a lively desert city situated in the heart of vast Thar
Desert. The city is world renowned for its forts and palaces which are
mute testimonies of royal valor of its rulers. The architecture of these
forts and palaces are perfect blend of ancient and medieval
architectural style. The city is divided into two parts-new city and new
city. The city has retained much of its old-world charm and also has
updated itself to meet the needs of the modern travelers. The city is
known for its warm hospitality and vivid culture.
The Golden city, Jaisalmer was founded by Rawal Jaisal, a Bhatti Rajput
ruler in year 1156 following the advice of a local hermit to set up his
new residence on the Tricut hills. In 13th century, Ala-ud-din Khilji,
the Turf-Afgan rular tried to siege the city. The women of the city
committed Johar and Duda, the son of Raja Jaisimha died during the
fierce battle. His descendents continued to rule the city. Initially
there were conflict between the Bhatti Rajputs and Mughals. Rawal Sahal
Singh showed remarkable valor during the Peshwar campaign of Shah Jahan
giving his full support. Emperor Shah Jahan gave the right of governance
to Sabala Simha. Jaisalmer was the last among the Rajputana states to
sign the 'Instrument of Agreement' with the British administration. In
1947, royals agreed to be a part of Independent India.
Jaisalmer Fort - Built in yellow sandstone, Jaisalmer Fort is an
800 year old fort. It is also known as Sonar Quila. It is situated on
Trikut hills.
Godisagar Lake - It was actually an artificial water tank built
to provide water supply to the city. It is a beautiful lake with lots of
shrines and Ghats surrounding it. The lake is one of the most tourist
attracting spots of Jaisalmer.
Desert National Park - Situated in an area of 3100 sq. km is a
protected sanctuary. Exotic flora and Fauna can be found in this
sanctuary. The national park is famous for Jeep Safaris.
Other major tourist attractions are Salim Ji Ki Haveli, Patwon
Ki Haveli, Nathmal Ji KI Haveli, Tazia Tower, Jain Temples, Wood Fossil
Park, Sam Sand Dunes and Desert Culture Center.
