The beautiful city had been a capital of Mewar dynasty. There is a
legend relating to the construction of this city. As per the legend,
Maharaja Udai Singh, a successor of Sisodia clan went for hunting in
Aravalli hills, where he met a saint. The saint blessed the king and
told him to make a palace on that very spot. He further said 'the palace
made on this spot would be well protected.' Therefore, Maharaja Udai
Singh built his residence there. The earlier capital of Udaipur was
Chittorgarh. It was under consequent attacks of Mughals and other
enemies. Subsequently, he shifted his whole kingdom to Udaipur and made
it the capital of his state. After Independence, this princely state
became a part of Rajasthan.
